In February, 2009, Derek sent a letter to the White House recommending that, in view of the present economic situation, the time was right for a similar garden. In his words: "I am sure you have received a large number of requests for the President to plant a vegetable garden at the White House as an example of how people can fight the recession. I have designed a vegetable garden that I would like the First Lady to consider for her children to plant." (see copy of original letter).

"My first mistake in gardening was starting too big. For a beginner, a 50-foot by 50-foot plot is a lot of ground to take care of. I'd have been much better off, as a raw novice, tending a patch just 10' wide by 15' long ... and I'd certainly have done better to stick with such "tried and true" vegetables as snap beans, zucchini squash, tomatoes, beets, carrots, radishes, and lettuce. I had been extremely foolish to take on melons and corn that first year! It's always smarter to master walking before you try to run."
